Over 300 years earlier, Nanhai people started to use the white rattans originated from Hainan Island to make handicrafts, and the local rattan weaving industry was so formed.
Over 150 years ago, an ambassador named Green Doer traveled all the way from the West by boat to visit the Qing Government, during his journey, an unexpected Typhoon forced his boat to take shelter at the Nanhai Commercial Port. In order to prevent the already-wet imperial furniture carried onboard from further damages, Green Doer made haste in having his beloved furniture moved down from the boat, some of the furniture were regal and some were simple but gorgeous, this was the first time the classical items from another country were ever exposed to the eyes of Nanhai people. While Nanhai people were carried away by the beauty of the occidental furniture, Green Doer also had his own amazement at the local rattan chairs. Taking advantage of the reorganization break of the ambassador group, Green Doer hired the local craftsmen to take his occidental furniture as references to make rattan furniture, after some attempts and gropes, a complete set of western imperial rattan furniture were given birth to by such innovation, and from this point, an epoch-making revolution in Nanhai rattan ware history began……
Thanks to the promoters ranging from Green Doer to Liang Canyao, within about a century, Nanhai rattan ware has been elevated from a commonly known traditional handicraft to an indispensable pillar in the furniture industry of China. As time travels, after the former Nanhai Overseas Chinese Rattan Wares Factory was also changed to Nanhai Rattan Wares Factory that’s seen as a giant in Chinese rattan furniture industry, a more representative inheritor and a superior brand of rattan furniture emerged.
Nowadays, standing on the foundation of handing down the essence of Nanhai rattan wares and undertaking the responsibility of glorifying the rattan wares, Liang Canyao and his “Rattan Kings Palace” have innovatively output a set of exquisite European rattan furniture, namely the “Occidental Ambassador Series”, which restages the classical Western imperial gorgeousness shortly glorifying Nanhai 150 years ago.
